This Is the Star
Published in Paperback by Voyager Books (October, 1998)
Authors: Joyce Dunbar and Gary Blythe

This Is the Star
This book is, without a doubt, one of the most wonderful books on my child's bookshelf. The text is a beautiful poem that winds its way through absoulutely riveting, gorgeous illustrations. The book is a work of art, and tells the Christmas story the way it should be told. Young or old, this book grabs your heart and stays with you all year. My three year old still points to the sky and asks "Is THAT the star, Mommy?" -- In a word, this book is PRICELESS.

A must have for the holiday season, December 2000
I do not ordinarily write book reviews, but reading this book has compelled me to send this message. I have never been so moved by a book. The verse is amazing in how it builds you through the story until the beautifully simplistic and meaningful ending. The illustrations are also breathtaking. In a time where Christmas has taken on the symbol of Santa and a sleigh full of toys, this book gives back the true meaning of Christmas. I would recommend this book to anyone. Happy Holidays.

Beautiful Art Showcases Poetic Verse
This is a wonderful Christmas book. The verse builds as each stage of the story of Christ's birth unfolds. It has a song-like cadence that marks true poetry and is excellent for reading aloud.

The accompanying art is breathtaking. Each page is beautifully illustrated by fine paintings that evoke their own feeling of the awsomeness of the sacred birth. All of the pictures are bathed in the shadow of night which lends stark beauty to their drama. The artist represents angles in a magnificent form that is truly inspiring.

Children will love this book and adults will treasure it.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Labrador Retrievers
Published in Paperback by Howell Book House (May, 1999)
Authors: Joel Walton, Eve Adamson, and Ian Dunbar
Average review score:

A must read for all dog owners, Labradorian or otherwise!
I recommend this book to all dog owners, regardless of breed. For those Labradorially inclined, the breed-specific information is invaluable, honest, and detailed. For Labradorians and all other dog owners, the behavior and training sections are some of the best I've read. This book is comprehensible and comprehensive.

The layout and writing style make the information extremely accessible. The information itself is extremely detailed and important to all dog owners. Joel and Eve have succeeded in explaining the secrets of making a good dog into a great dog, through management and training.

It's no surprise this book is so popular. Not only is it about one of the most wonderful and popular breeds of dog today, but it is chock full of information vital to dog owners of any breed.

In my capacity as a professional dog trainer, I have had occasion to work with puppy owners who have read this book, and I have to say "What a difference a book makes"--this book! Owners who have read this book understand how their dogs' minds work, and grasp what I have to teach them about training and problem solving that much easier. Thank you, Joel and Eve, for helping me do my job better!

*Great book for lab owners*
There's LOTS of good advise whether you're a novice or long time lab owner. There's stuff here that you'd only get from a long-time breeder of Labs. It's unlike any other book on the market that I've found. They have crammed volumes of info into one book.

Great book!
I am thirteen and have read a lot of books on Labs, but none compare to this! It is very easy to read and gives a whole lot of information. I would definitely recommend it to readers of all ages.

Dog Behavior
Published in School & Library Binding by TFH Publications (December, 1979)
Author: Ian Dunbar
Average review score:

Want to understand your dog better?
Many dog behavior books seem to focus more on dog obedience/training rather than on dog 'behavior.' As the owner of 2 chihuahuas, I'm interested in dog obedience to some extent, but I've always wanted to know more about why my dogs behave a certain way. What do they really mean when they do certain things? So, I was pleasantly surprised to find this wonderful little book!

The author explains such behaviors as why dogs wag their tails... why dogs know how long to continue to view another dog as still being a puppy... how dogs develop their hierarchies... and yet, the author doesn't overgeneralize about these behaviors either. He describes the stages of a dog's development from puppy to adult, and he dispels some myths about dog intelligence and dog training.

I found the author's attitude very refreshing and I think this is another reason that I enjoyed this book so much. He genuinely likes dogs and he portrays them as the intelligent, emotional, and social creatures that they are.

Informative and entertaining
This is a very thin book, but it is just packed with insight and information. The author clearly loves dogs and understands them. My favorite thing about the book is the subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) humor that he uses to make his points. I loved his turns of phrase and his abhorence for cruelty in any of its disguised forms. It is a fact that often what we think we are training the dog to do is the opposite of what we are really teaching. Dr. Dunbar is not afraid to point this out.

A MUST BUY For Any Dog/Puppy Owner!
This is an EXCELLENT book to help you understand your dog and how to head off any behavior problems that may occur as the dog matures. I would suggest reading it BEFORE you get a puppy/dog and learn how and why it is SOOO important to properly socialize it at a very early age. Dunbar makes total sense and his recommendations have always worked with my dogs and others whom I have loaned my book to. It is fun and easy to read.

After You Get Your Puppy

A perfect bare-bones pratical guide for dog owners!
I have read other wonderful books by Dr. Dunbar, but this one takes the biscuit! Whether you are a first time puppy parent or seasoned dog lover, this book will provide you with tons of useful and up to date information on how to raise and live with your canine best friend. Personally, the advice on throwing out the dog food bowl and replacing it with stuffed chew toys saved my relationship (not to mention my furniture) with my new little guy. What a clever idea! A very refreshing look at dog training, this book stand out in a field where the books often parrot tired, out-dated advice. How lovely to see Dr. Dunbar thinking outside of the box!

every puppy buyer should have to read this book!
If everyone who obtained a puppy read, and followed the advice in this book, there would be far less ill mannered pets and more owners would be happy with the dogs they have raised!

I raise Rottweilers and Shiba Inu and this book is mandatory reading for all my puppy buyers!

After You Get Your Puppy
What can I say, but "bravo" on another great series of books, "Before You Get Your Puppy and After You Get Your Puppy". It goes without saying that Ian is a mentor to me and many others! Through his straight-forward and honest teachings, I've evolved as trainer. He's unique, original and confident enough to continue to evolve himself. His other books and video series are a "must have" for any serious trainers. I met Ian about 15 years ago at a workshop and then at APDT conferences. To say that he has guided me and is a valued mentor is not enough. He wrote the foreword for my book, Train Your Dog, Change Your Life, encouraged and challenged me! Without Ian, I would have gotten this published. With Ian I got it published by a major publishing house. He believed in my idea and gave me the confidence to just "do it". The basis of my book comes from the seeds that he planted, colored with my own style. He launches sparks that ignite your brain waves ... he encourages open-mindedness. In the process, we learn about ourselves. For that I'm forever grateful and STRONGLY RECOMMEND any of his books and videos. For the novice, these two small paperbacks will guide you before you get your pup, then take you into basics training after you get your pup. They will "wake you up" and teach you how reward based behavior training is the "only way" and especially with pups. Maureen Ross, MA, NCC, CPDT, Director of Dog Talk & TheraPet, ...

Touched by An Angel
Amanda Dunbar has an extraordinary gift. To look at her paintings gives me a sense of inner peace and hope. I'm also amazed at the technique and vibrance of colour each one of her painting has. I would love to own at least one of her paintings. it would definitely be a valuable collectible and worthwhile investment. But for now the book is fantastic ! Keep up the good work Amanda!

This book is totally awesome and inspiring. Amanda's work is so beautiful and I believe that she is an angel that is "guided by angels". She is truly a gifted young lady with a promising future. She gives of herself in so many wonderful ways! God bless you, Amanda !

A Visit with Amanda

I shall forever cherish my signed copy of "Guided by the Angels" My husband and I were so drawn in to her vision that we purchased one of her original paintings entitled, "Keeper of the Lights". This book is a great and inexpensive way to have a glimpse at creation as seen through the eyes of a true angel here on earth, Mandi keep doing God's work and his light shall forever shine through you!

Red Dirt: Growing Up Okie
Published in Paperback by Verso Books (June, 1998)
Authors: Roxanne Dunbar Ortiz, Rozanne Dunbar-Oritz, and Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz
Average review score:

history and struggles of the frontier settler class
...
The best of autobiographical works are those that convey, in the telling of one life story, larger truths than those we experience as individuals. To accomplish this feat with seeming effortlessness, as Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz has done with Red Dirt, is to create not only a valuable historical record, but a literary work that is a pleasure to read. Employing the finest storytelling skills, Dunbar-Ortiz lovingly recollects her youth in Oklahoma and the family dynamics she experienced "growing up Okie" during the mid-20th-century. In the process, she touches upon a host of social issues--among them racism, sexism, and economic disparity--that have plagued the U.S. since its earliest days. Perhaps most importantly, she offers one resounding voice from among a vast population--namely, the white underclass--that consistently has been underrepresented in historical texts, and misrepresented in popular culture. Exploding the notion of 'poor white trash,' Dunbar-Ortiz offers three-dimensional alternative as she reconstructs through her personal memoir the history and struggles of the frontier settler class and its descendants. As we move into the next century, Red Dirt is a text of vital significance to our collective humanity

could not put down
if you like books about the old way of living, you will love this book. it brings back memories of my childhood...

A New Fan
I grew up in central Oklahoma and can identify with many of the themes Ms. Dunbar-Ortiz writes about in Red Dirt. I think anyone who is on a journey of self-discovery or is attempting to reconcile his or her past will enjoy this book as much as I did. I rarely read literature about Oklahoma that makes me proud to be an "Okie" - this book does just that.

Dangling on a String
Published in Paperback by Sterling House Pub (30 April, 2001)
Author: Gloria Dunbar
Average review score:

The Real World
The heroine, Tina, is as intriguing as any notable J. California Cooper character we've ever encountered. Gloria Dunbar, the author, weaves a tale that smacks of "mother-wits" virtues. We cry, laugh, and dream with Tina; Bruce, the duckling who becomes a swan; Cassandra, a very wise {"kiss my butt, World"} friend, and a host of other people, and I deem them people_not characters in this "up all night reading novel"! Folks, you'll love and relate to this wonderful tale.

An excellent piece of work
Ms. Dunbar did an excellent job in character development. Everyone can relate to Tina's growing up and finding her way through life's many surprises. It's a real eye-opener to see how middle class black folks live without violence and do have normal lives. Part of the fun and excitement of this novel was contemplating Tina's next move, and the excitement of seeing where Bruce's heart will eventually land. I could have wished for more pages to see the outcome for Tina and Bruce, but I can wait for the next novel. An excellent up all night read.

Dangling on a String by Gloria Dunbar
Reading "Dangling on a String" is much like watching a terrific romance movie. Each chapter of this intriguing novel flows smoothly into the next chapter which made it difficult to lay down. It as also delightful reading about African-Americans, portrayed as having moral values...no different than other races of people. The segment of events are so realistic that I felt like each chapter was quoting the life of someone I actually know. "Dangling on a String" is a MUST READ for both the romantic and the non-romantic reader.

Catherine : the story of a young girl who died of anorexia
Published in Unknown Binding by Viking ()
Author: Maureen Dunbar
Average review score:

Excellent
This is an excellent book. ...I would recommend this book to those suffering from an eating disorder, or to the friends and family of a sufferer as it gives great inssight.

DANGERS OF DIETING
I read the novel 'Catherine' a few years ago, and it deeply saddened me. 'Catherine' is written by the mother of a twenty-two year old girl who died of anorexia nervosa in 1984.

The testimony is a brave and frank account of Catherine's terrible illness which gripped her from the age of fifteen years old. It intersperses extracts from Catherine's diary, which show the tragic mental and physical effect this illness had on her. Her diary records her food intake, and her weight, which tragically plummets to 3 stone when she dies.

It touches on her childhood days, where Catherine was a happy and bubbly child, and continues throughout the development of her illness.

I would recommend this book to anyone, especially young girls considering dieting. It shows how out of hand dieting can be, and certainly a great help to those suffering from anorexia. I myself suffered from this illness, and this book gave me some strength to battle with it. I didn't want to die like Catherine, and the many other girls who die each year from this horrifying condition.

truthful insight into an often romaticised world
eating disorders are often romanticised; few know of the realpain which they cause, and courage which they demand, in both thesufferer and the family members and friends. this touching documentary of a young girls struggle with, and eventual defeat by anorexia nervosa is openly told by her mother and accompanied by excerts from her diaries. as the book so truthfully details catherine's behaviours, it may be disturbing to the unaware, tear-wrenching to those directly/indirectly affected but yet also so critical to the understanding of the seriousness of these psychological disorders.

delightful
I read this story to my son and his pre-school class. They loved it. The cadence was lyrical and the ending was uplifting...

Wonderful book for toddlers!
This book is great! The illustrations are vibrant and can tell the story themselves. A simple story that tells of an adventure of the baby bird learning to fly. Wonderful book!

Baby Bird
My 2 year old son loves this book. Each page is a one liner and he now enjoys reading this book to himself. It is so cute and colorful and he reads it several times a day. I only wish I could buy it. We have it on loan from our library.
